DLL Journey Synthesis
When I first was introduced to the Simon Sinek TED Talk “Start With Why“ I began to analyze and meditate on the reasons why I decided to become an educator. The answer to my introspection was the next poem I wrote in a few minutes. With the progress of the DLL program, I polished it a bit, but the essence is the original.
Why are you a teacher?
They ask.
I think they expect a grandiloquent response,
But, no!
Was it a call to vocation?
No!
Is it the money, the humongous vacations, the prestige?
No, no, no!
Is it because you want to live with a broad sense of purpose?
Hmm, that’s interesting; but, no!
Is it because you want to experience personal growth?
I don’t want to grow! Nooo!
Is it because you want to give and receive unconditional love?
Who told you that it is unconditional? Nooo!
Why are you a teacher?
They ask
I really don’t know,
Or… maybe… it’s…
Their laughter,
Their tears,
Their happiness,
Their grief,
Their brightness,
Their frustration,
Their love,
Their ephemeral rancor.
I REALLY DON’T KNOW!
But… I know…
It’s because of them.
Also with the passage of time, my Why, How, & What evolved.
